Ghana’s Alomo Bitters Sold 13.9 Million Bottles in Nigeria in 2018

Alomo Bitters, a popular herbal alcoholic drink produced by Kasapreko Ltd., recorded impressive sales in Nigeria in 2018, selling 13.9 million bottles. This figure translates to 580,000 cartons, according to John Adesoye, the Nigerian Sales Representative for Kasapreko Ltd.

Alomo Bitters’ Market Performance

Since its introduction to Nigeria in 2014, Alomo Bitters has gained a loyal customer base. The product comes in various sizes and price points:

  • 100ml bottle (Kasapreko Alomo) – N150
  • 200ml bottle (Kalahari K20) – N250
  • 750ml bottle (Alomo Sachet) – N850

Alomo Bitters is widely consumed, especially by men, due to its purported benefits, including sexual enhancement, improved blood circulation, and anti-malaria properties.

Challenges: Counterfeiting and Expansion Delays

The brand’s high demand in Nigeria led to widespread counterfeiting, which posed a serious challenge to its reputation. As a result, Kasapreko Ltd. was forced to suspend its proposed $50 million plant in Nigeria.

To combat this, the company introduced a hologram seal to authenticate original Alomo Bitters and protect consumers from fake products.

Health Warnings from Experts

Despite its popularity, health experts have raised concerns over the consumption of herbal bitters.

  • Dr. David Ajoh emphasized that NAFDAC does not approve any bitters that have not been properly tested and certified. He warned against consuming uncertified products.
  • Mrs. Bukola Smith, a nutritionist, advised consumers to be cautious, as many bitters are not hygienically packaged and contain high alcohol levels, which may pose health risks.

Final Thoughts

Alomo Bitters’ success in Nigeria highlights the strong demand for herbal alcoholic beverages. However, issues such as counterfeiting and health concerns remain critical. By addressing these challenges and ensuring quality control, Kasapreko Ltd. can continue to grow its market share while prioritizing consumer safety.
